Domenico Bianchi

Born in 1955, Bianchi now lives and works in Rome. After his studies at the Fine Art Academy in Rome, he made began his career in the art world in 1977 with his first solo show for Ugo Ferranti at the Fine Art Building, New York. For this show, he exhibited twenty drawings of wax, cardboard, wood and canvas.

In the 1980’s, Bianchi became one of the emerging artists of the so-called La Nuova Scuola Romana and he exhibited his work alongside the Arte Povera artists: Kounellis, Mario and Marisa Merz, and Pistoletto, among others. Their artistic approaches have since influenced his studies of spatiality.  Light has become a consistent part of his work, and through the medium of wax, he displays the same process on each work: successive layers of wax make appear a thoroughly predefined central motif, formed with lines and interlaces. As a result of this process, “the shape of the artwork is not submitted to an ideal geometry, an abstract project, but allows itself to be determinated by the technique: the exclusive color of a particular substance or the characteristic proper to a given material can therefore be sufficient to motivate the specific structural reason of each picture.”

Bianchi has participated in four Venice Biennales (2011, 1986, 1984, and as a solo artist in 1993), and in 1992, he participated in the 3rd Biennale of Istanbul. He also participated in the group show Terrae Motus organized by Lucio Amelio at the Reggia di Caserta. Additionally, his works have been exhibitied in numerous solo exhibitions in famous European museums such as: Slewe Gallery, Amsterdam (1994); the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1994); and MACRO, Rome (2003) . Additionally, he has permanent work at the Metropolitana in Naples (Materdei Station), and the Museum Donnaregina, Naples.  Other important exhibitions include: P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (1999); and Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2004).
